 A few years ago I assembled two Porsche 996 side by side: a Cabrio from Revell and, at the same time, a Carrera from Tamiya, in order to compare qualities. I finally said that “never again”: the Tamiya kit now lives in my glass cabinet, and the Revell ended in the garbage can (but in the right container for recycling  ) BUT… today I can finally say that, nowadays, Revell has VASTLY improved their designs and overall quality… ¡¡about time!!

 Hace algunos años monté simultaneamente dos Porsche 996 para comparar calidades: un Cabrio de Revell y un Carrera de Tamiya. Finalmente, tuve que decir aquello de “nunca más”; el kit de Tamiya vive expuesto en la vitrina, y el kit de Revell terminó en el cubo de la basura (pero en su contenedor correcto para reciclaje ). Pero hoy puedo decir que el Revell actual ha mejorado muy mucho sus diseños y calidades… ¡¡Por fin!!

A bit of history…DTM, which stands for Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (that is German Touring Championship), it’s the german speed competition par excelence since 2000 (and before, formerly named Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Deutschen Produktionswagen Meisterschaft). The competing cars are vehicles that simulate the looks of standard road cars, but with completely different mechanics, reaching near 300km/h (180 mph). As a good german manufacturer, Revell placed their focus on the DTM cars, and have several models in their catalog since a few years. This time, the “SpotModel Quickie” exam goes to the 2012 BMW M3, one of the latest references that Revell has placed on the market. But before we get hands on, and as we do in every “Quickie”, here’s our mandatory disclaimer |
Un poco de historia…El DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, o Campeonato Alemán de Turismos) es la competición de velocidad por excelencia que se disputa en Alemania desde el año 2000 (e incluso antes, con los nombres de Deutschen Produktionswagen Meisterschaft y Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft). Los automóviles que participan son vehículos cuya apariencia simula la de automóviles de calle, pero cuyas mecánicas son totalmente distintas, alcanzando velocidades que rondan los 300 km/h. Como buena marca alemana, Revell ha puesto el foco en los coches del DTM y tiene unos cuantos modelos en catálogo desde hace algunos años. En ésta ocasión le toca pasar el examen del “Rapidito” de SpotModel al BMW M3 del año 2012, que es de las últimas referencias que Revell ha puesto en el mercado. It’s time to Revell!The parts listing is quite generous, even more for the quite moderated price of the whole kit. Plastic injection comes in grey, black, transparent, blueish and chrome colors, and with a really really good overal design. You can say from the listing, the sections and the fittings that they’ve updated their 3D design tools for good. But… they keep assigning the making of the assembly instructions to their interns, and they’re as sad as always Come on, let’s pop out those sprues! The engine has an extensive and correcly detailed break up, even containing several parts that can NOT be seen once the assembly is finished. We feel really sorry for those of you who want to build an in-depth detailed kit, since lining the whole engine bay with carbon fibre decals and the different engine parts will surely become an exhausting task. The lack of enclosed photographs, or detailed zooms, or anything in this model is a real pitty. |
¿Y qué nos traen los Revell Magos?El despiece es muy generoso, más aún para el muy moderado precio del kit. La inyección del plástico es en tonos gris, negro, transparente, azulado, y cromado, con un diseño general muy muy muy bueno. Se nota que han cambiado sus herramientas de diseño 3D a juzgar por cómo está hecho el despiece, los encajes, las secciones, … Aunque las instrucciones de montaje la sigue haciendo alguno de los becarios, son igual del tristes que siempre Venga, vamos a darle caña al plasticazo… El motor trae un buen despiece y un correcto detalle, incluso trae piezas que llegan a no verse al final del montaje. Ahora, pobres de aquellos que quieran hacer un detallado en profundidad porque forrar de calca de carbono todo el vano y las diferentes partes del motor puede ser una tarea agotadora. Una pena que no se incluyan fotografías, ni detallados, ni nada de nada para éste modelo. |

| One interesting side note: the kit includes the gear box, rear wheel transaxle and exhaust. They’re all well constructed, well solved, well divided, but you can’t see any of them once you’ve finished the building. Well, you can barely see the final part of the exhaust pipes, but nothing else. Believe me, no one will notice if you skip all of them…
What’s the point of including these parts? If at least you had the option of an open door assembly, or open rear section, you could at least catch a glimpse, but it’s not the case. |
Un apunte interesante: el kit incluye la caja de cambios, la transmisión al eje trasero, y los tubos de escape. Están todos bien elaborados, bien resueltos, bien despiezados, pero una vez montada la maqueta… ¡no se ven!. De los escapes al menos se llega a ver la salida de humos, pero nada más del resto de piezas. Si no se montan, creeme que nadie se va a dar cuenta de ello…
¿Qué sentido tienen éstas piezas? Si al menos se diera la opción del montaje con las puertas abiertas o la sección trasera desmontada aun se verían, pero NO es el caso. |

| The wheels and brake system are really funny. Manufacturers usually plan the building around the turning axis of the rims, but here Revell has gone for a radial assembly. One may think it’s not a very elegant solution at first sight, but I liked it very much since it’s fast, easy to paint, and the whole assembly turns very compact and good looking… The problem will come later if we want to enhance this subset, or if we want to take out one rim for a garage or pit stop diorama, but that’s a different story.
Brake discs and calipers are solved quite good, with enough details to make everything look good from the outside, but the rims are a bit poor: loosely designed, fat spoked, oversized centers, quite clumsy and very different from the real ones. And… why placing them in the chrome sprues, if you will paint them in anthracite at the end? These are the worst parts of the whole kit, even more considering that they are one of the easier to design. |
Las llantas y el sistema de frenos son realmente curiosos. Normalmente los fabricantes articulan el montaje alrededor de lo que sería el eje de giro de las llantas, pero aquí Revell ha optado por un montaje radial. Puede no ser una solución muy elegante a primera vista pero a mi me ha gustado mucho ya que es rápida, fácil de pintar, queda todo el conjunto muy compacto y resultón… El problema vendrá si queremos mejorar el conjunto o si queremos retirar una llanta para un diorama de taller o de un pit stop, pero eso es otra historia.
Los discos y mordazas de freno están bien resueltos, con el detalle correcto para que visualmente se vea todo bien desde el exterior, pero las llantas son flojas, no muy bien diseñadas, con los radios muy anchos, el centro de la llanta sobredimensionado, bastante bastas y diferentes de las llantas reales. ¿Y por qué se sirven cromadas, si al final hay que pintarlas en un tono antracita? Esto es lo que más desmerece de toda la maqueta, cuando puede que sea de las partes más fáciles de diseñar. |

| The interior is simply delicious: good break up, good detail, and very precise fittings. Let me say again: VERY PRECISE fittings! Even we became really surprised when writting this for a Revell. But then, we come to the bucket seats… harness and seat itself all moulded into one piece!!?? Dear sirs at Revell, please never EVER do that again. You’d better leave it plain, or add some harness decals. Get ready for lots of transpiration and suffering if you want to add cloth belts or any other bluckle details… |
El habitáculo es simplemente delicioso: buen despiece, buen detalle, y muy buenos encajes. Repito: ¡MUY BUENOS encajes! Hasta yo mismo me sorprendo diciendo esto de un Revell. Pero claro, llegamos al asiento, con… ¿¿¡¡los arneses y el propio asiento inyectados en una sola pieza!!?? Por favor, señores de Revell, NUNCA jamás hagan esto. Es mejor no poner nada, o añadir una calca con los arneses. El que quiera poner arneses de tela u otro material que se vaya preparando para una buena dosis de sufrimiento… |

| Bodyworks are THE BEST of the kit: perfectly fitting, well panelled, very clean… it really fits like a glove. BUT be careful with the instructions though, since they say that the car must be matte painted… Well, the actual car was not glossy indeed, but refering to it as “matte” may be somewhat excesive. If it was me, I’d better finish it in black satin, doing it with either paint or clearcoating. |
La carrocería es de lo mejor de la maqueta: un encaje perfecto, bien despiezada, correctamente panelada, muy limpia… ¡encaja como un guante! PERO ojito que las instrucciones dicen que el coche ha de pintarse en mate. En efecto el coche real no era brillante, pero decir “mate” puede ser un pelín demasiado. Para mi gusto es mejor acabarlo en un tono negro satinado, ya sea con pintura o con barniz. |

Again with the weird things of this kit: the front grids of the car are black in the actual car. But again, why do they come in chrome? Twice the work, getting rid of the crome and painting. I just don’t understand 
Be careful with the small winglets on the front spoiler. They fit very well, even more given the dificulty of this piece (again Revell surprises me for good), but I recommend to spend as much time as needed to get them perfectly aligned and well glued. It’s not hard, but hurries here can really bring down the final result. |
De nuevo vamos con las cosas raras de este kit: las rejillas frontales del coche son negras en el modelo real. ¿Por qué vienen cromadas? Doble trabajo, quitar el cromado y pintar. No lo entiendo
Ojo con los pequeños alerones del faldón delantero. Encajan muy bien, más aún para lo complicado de la pieza (de nuevo Revell me sorprende gratamente), pero recomiendo dedicar todo el tiempo que sea necesario para que queden perfectamente alineados y bien pegados. No es difícil, pero las prisas aquí pueden desmerecer enormemente el resultado final. |

| Decals are another of the many delights from this kit. They are printed in Italy, with a wonderful design, good definition, very precious, with some parts with offset printing (have a look at our previous post, and don’t miss the video!), and… there are lots of them! I really loved them, and I hope every one falls correctly into place… We don’t expect anything less than that, do we? |
Otra de las muchas delicias de ésta maqueta son las calcas: impresas en Italia, con un diseño precioso, muy definidas, muy finas, con partes impresas mediante técnicas de offset (échale un ojo a nuestro post anterior y ¡no te pierdas el video!) y… ¡muy numerosas! Me han encantado, y supongo que irán todas a su sitio… No esperamos menos, ¿verdad? |

| And what if you want some rock ‘n’ roll? You’re very lucky, since there are lots of products in the market to turn this kit up one notch in reality and quality, improving some of the weak points I told you before.
Hobby Design has a very interesting rims and brake discs set, which is exactly what this kit needs if you plan to build a diorama or display with dettached wheels: for instance, the discs come with the ventilation holes, and it even includes some photoetches to simulate the brake pads. |
¿Y si eres de los que les gusta la marcha? Pues estás de suerte, porque hay una serie de productos en el mercado para hacer que la maqueta suba un peldaño en realismo y calidad, mejorando algunos de los puntos débiles que comentaba antes.
Hobby Design tiene un muy interesante set de llantas y discos de freno que es lo que necesita la maqueta si quieres hacer un diorama o un display con las llantas desmontadas: por ejemplo, los discos de freno vienen con las perforaciones de ventilación, e incluso unos fotograbados para simular las pastillas de freno. |

| A more conservative and quicker option are Scale Production rims, that can easily replace the ones included in the kit at a very interesting price. As always in Scale Production, perfect resins, without bubbles or weird things, and troubleless fitting over the Revell assembly. |

| In the photoetches section, there are two products at this time, one from Studio27 and one from Hobby Design. They’re both very similar, although the sheets from Hobby Designs are a lot thinner and have some more pieces like the rear spoiler brackets, brake discs, clothing belts for the harness and resin buckles, for instance. |
En la sección de fotograbados hay dos productos ahora mismo, uno de Studio27 y otro de Hobby Design. Ambos son muy similares, si bien las planchas de Hobby Design son bastante más delgadas y tienen algunas piezas más como, por ejemplo, los soportes del alerón trasero, los discos de freno, la tela para los arneses, o el cierre del arnés en resina. |

| But without any doubts, there’s one absolutely essential product: the carbon fibre pattern decals from Racing Decals 43, specifically designed for these kits. As always, it’s a matter of personal taste, but I think the carbon pattern has a little too much contrast, so a thin layer of smoke paint or some very diluted black would help to vastly improve realism. |
Pero sin duda alguna, hay un producto que es absolutamente imprescindible: las calcas de patrones de fibra de carbono de Racing Decals 43, que han sido diseñadas específicamente para estos kits. Es cuestión de gustos, como siempre, pero las tramas de carbono las veo demasiado contrastadas, así que una fina capa de pintura humo o de algún negro muy diluido ayudaría mucho a aumentar el realismo. |

¡Es un artículo interesantísimo! Tengo este kit, en la versión de ‘Martin Tomcyzk’ y espero con interés construirlo.
Sin embargo, no puedo decidir si debo utilizar las calcas de Tomcyzk o comprar las calcas de ‘Deutsche Post’…?

I can tell that i buy the same model, for slotcar purpose. i only uses the body parts spoiler, splitters, and the lose body parts under the main body part. Also i use the mirrors, glass. The body parts are rigide and easy to fix. I use a special glue to assemble the parts what made de body very hard and rigide. Also i use carbon fiber to make de body crash proof. For the wheels i use a multy tool to make them fix in a slotcar wheel as insert.
That may be my reason to use only revell kits for slotcar purposes.
